After the tax sale you have a right to “redeem” your property. This means you can pay the cost of the tax lien, interest, new taxes and certain fees to keep the property.

The longer you wait to redeem the property, the more expensive it will be to keep the house.

To redeem the house, pay the City the full amount of the tax lien, interest, any new taxes and fees from the tax sale. To redeem you must pay the full amount at Abel Wolman Municipal Building, 200 Holliday Street, Baltimore MD 21202.

Step 1

Contact the person or company who bought your tax lien at tax sale and pay them for certain costs and attorney’s fees that are owed. The purchaser will give you a receipt that you have paid. Bring this receipt to the City when you complete Step 2 (below)
What costs can they charge me?
After 7 months, they can only charge a fee for
  • recording the certificate of sale,
  • a title search fee of up to $250, and
  • attorney's fees of up to $500

Step 2

Pay the City the amount of the lien, plus 12% interest (rate for homeowners), plus any new taxes that are owed. Call 410-396-3987 to get a payoff amount.

**Tip – some purchasers will negotiate with you and allow you to pay a lower amount or make a payment plan. Free lawyers from Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service at 443-451-4067 or the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau at 800-999-8904 may be able to help.
